Free Music: Get Your Christmas On

I have a rule. I don’t listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving.

But rules were made to be broken, right?

When Annie sent me this link, I had to listen to the songs to see if were good enough to blog about.

So I listened...and now I’m all nostalgic and holiday-sappy. Thanks Annie.

Seriously, though, this is a really fun holiday sampler. Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, The Beach Boys. How can you go wrong? Oh, and the songs sound great. I’ve often found that old music sounds....old. These songs have been remixed and remastered and they are holiday ear candy, my friends.

And did I mention that it’s free? ‘Cuz it is. So, go get your Christmas on.

I’m quite partial to Amy Grant’s Christmas albums.

My kids even like to watch the vhs tape (remember those?) I have of Amy Grant’s Christmas special back in like 1986. Because ‘80’s clothes and hair pretty much look like an episode of Barney or the Wiggles.

My kids also think O Come All Ye Faithful is an Amy Grant song…

I had a Amy Grant Christmas album when I was a kid, and I did like it a lot.

Now I really like the “City on a Hill,” Christmas collection.  I am going to get a couple new ones this year that may become new favorites!

I’ll echo Kristin’s choice of “City On A Hill: It’s Christmas Time”, especially “Manger Throne” by Third Day, “Babe In The Straw” by Caedmon’s Call and “Child of Love” by Sara Groves.  Amazing album, and some year’s it’s pretty much the only album I need (along with Shaun Groves and George Rowe singing “O Come All Ye Faithful”, Amy Grant singing “Emmanuel, God With Us”, Todd Agnew singing “Bethlehem Dawn”, 4Him singing “Strange Way To Save The World”, Smitty singing “Emmanuel”, BarlowGirl singing “O Holy Night”, Kathy Mattea singing “Mary Did You Know” and Chris Rice singing “Welcome To Our World").  Naturally, that’s my Christmas songs playlist on my iPod.

Megan, I have Sixpence singing “Babe In The Straw” (LOVE that song) on a collection called “One Silent Night” which also has Amy Grant singing “Child of God”.  Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/One-Silent-Night-Various-Artists/dp/B00004Z3S8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1227554783&sr=8-5

Hands down, the best Christmas album ever is the Sufjan Stevens Christmas album.  Really just nice and holy covers of Christmas favorites, combined with wintery new songs that I actually want to listen to more than once.  Though some of the above mentinoed were good.
